We come to understand that there is struggle in every dream.
When we dream about the future when we are young, we are tempted by ambitions that are little more than fantasy. Children aimlessly dream of a life without hardship. When we look back on our lives as adults, we remember the greatest difficulties we faced and the important lessons we learned through them. We come to understand that there is struggle in every dream.
My early dreams sprang from the loneliness and boredom I experienced during my early life. My father died when I was two years old, and my grandmother undertook my care after my mother moved away. We lived in a small village and led a simple life. We ate one meal a day, mostly dates and loaves. The Holy Koran was my only way to understand things; it was my first source of knowledge. When I was seven years old, we moved to Riyadh to live with my uncle, traveling on camelback across the desert for two days and nights. During our journey, the ambiguity of going towards the unknown ignited my small mind. I saw myself as an adventurer wading into his first encounter with the horizon.
A new world opened to me in Riyadh. In addition to the love and limitless care I experienced from my grandmother, my uncle showed much affection to me. I attended the first public school in Riyadh and had expert teachers there. I started my practical life at age 14 working in a shop. At age 17 I had my first trial in independent business, and failed after six months.
The difficult experiences of my early life taught me valuable lessons and prepared me for more hardships to come as I established myself in business and set up the Riyadh House Establishment in 1958 with a partner. We lost money in the early years, and later I faced the challenge of getting money to buy out my partner. But I continued to dream. My dreams were based on what I had learned through my own experiences and the guidance that my mentors and loyal friends gave to me.
The first great lesson I learned as a young man has been the foundation for all my dreams since: Nothing is impossible for the will of God, with good intention, hard work and persistence.
My dream for the future is that people will continue to dream within the realities of their lives, learn from challenges, and study, plan and work with optimism every day. Life is full of big ventures and opportunities, even when the early steps are hard.
