and journalist and something of a ringmaster
for these proceedings.

No doubt you’ve heard the old business cliché that hope is not a strategy. I disagree. Hope is a sustainable value that inspires us to see the world as a source of meaning.
In 100 years, machines may manage the economy, not economists or politicians.
In this historical moment we are living in, of obvious model change, my wish is that we learn to swim through the excess of information and to dive into the essence of things.

Broken Dreams
From my understanding in how one must face the future, there are two types of people: those that believe in destiny and those that believe in living life from day to day. For those who believe in destiny, life has a reason that has been predetermined. Sooner or later they’ll end up with what’s been predestined for them. For the others, the future doesn’t exist. Life is configured through what we do or let happen by living in the present. Those that believe in destiny are usually dreamers. They “guess” that whatever will be, is waiting for them. On the contrary, individuals that believe the future is built from the present tend to be visionaries; fans of “imagining” how the future will be built. Perhaps these two types of people don’t exist. Perhaps we are simply individuals with both halves: part dreamer that brings us to “believe” that something good is waiting for us just around the corner, and part visionary that makes us “think” that the future is in our own hands, our work, and our efforts.
Students tend to be dreamers. Some dream only while sleeping while others also dream awake. Of the latter of the two, there are those whose dreams come true and those whose dreams are broken along the way. Educators must be visionaries. Avoiding academic failure should be the primary objective of all good educational systems. Making students fulfill their dreams of becoming wiser and better people must be the primary motivation for those of us that dedicate ourselves to education. According to Mandela, Education is the most powerful weapon one can use to change the world. Education is the key to transform society and make it progress.
Clearly, we can’t build a better world made up of the dreams of millions of human beings who have no access to education, or only to a very poor education that is abandoned very early on. We can’t build a better world made up of the broken dreams of a majority of children who can’t attend school in poor countries. We can’t build a better world made up of the broken dreams of those who have no access to university studies in countries where higher education is still dominated by elitism. We can’t build a better world made up of the broken dreams of those who never finish what they’ve started because of the inflexibility of the education system. Millions of beautiful dreams are broken by the nightmares of those who feel scared about the progress and the future, or by those who believe that one’s life ends every day when the sun sets.
I like people who believe that another type of education is possible, an education which frees them from fear and ignorance. I like those who believe that education makes the dream which everyone has in their heart real: the dream of a society living in harmony, full of freedom and justice.

In the former role, he is leading Laureate’s expansion throughout the Mediterranean Region, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. He is also responsible for the development of the unique partnership between Laureate International Universities and Real Madrid.
Before joining Laureate, Dr. Carmelo was chairman of Unilever Spain. He previously served as European division director and vice president of marketing and sales for Unilever.
Dr. Carmelo earned degrees in economics and business administration at Universidad Complutense and his Ph.D. in economics from Universidad Autonoma.
